Concentration, the Number One Tip to Improve Memory

There is nothing like driving all the way to the grocery store and then forgetting why you made the trip in the first place. I’m sure all of us can relate to how frustrating forgetfulness can be, no matter what our age or occupation. There are a myriad of things we can do and learn to counter this, but if I had to choose my favorite tip to improve memory, I’d have to say better concentration is the key to reaching this goal.

The inability to concentrate is one of the largest problems when a person is trying to memorize something. If you aren’t concentrating while you are trying to place something in your short or long-term memory, that information will never even make it into your brain to begin with. It certainly wont make it anywhere close to your permanent memory. I know that one of the most frustrating things that I do is forget where I put my sunglasses and cell phone, and am always searching for them when I’m trying to leave the house. Then I get frustrated when I have to hunt around for my missing belongings. The cause of this forgetfulness is the failure to concentrate on exactly where I’m putting my phone as I set it down. A good strategy is to ignore the things that are going on around us and simply concentrate on the chore at hand. One trick is to announce out loud, “I’m leaving my phone next to the keys on top of the microwave.” You should make an attempt to block out any other distractions that might be taking your attention away from what you are doing or memorizing.

Improving concentration is a great tip to improve memory, but such simple advice can seem overwhelming. Where do you start? While it’s true that external distractions are huge roadblocks to concentration, and we should give due diligence to eliminate them, there are other things we can do to improve the quality of our time spent working and concentrating. Try giving yourself an occasional, well deserved break. Get up and walk around for a few minutes. This will stretch your muscles and get the blood flowing throughout your body, eliminating sore muscles from sitting and working. Another tip is to mix up your work environment by taking your work outside if the weather permits. Some people I know like to work or study at the library or a local coffee shop. Sometimes a little change is good for the mind.

One of the biggest complaints I hear from people is that they are constantly embarrassed by not remembering the name of a new acquaintance. There is an amazingly easy way to never experience this problem again. Try concentrating on the person, saying their name aloud, and at the same time, ignoring other distractions in the area. Try it next time you are introduced to a stranger, and you’ll be amazed at how efficient it is! Don’t let the other things going on around you distract you from the person you are meeting. Focus on him or her and repeat the name back and you’ll remember it!

A tip to improve memory and reading comprehension is to practice better concentration while you’re reading or studying. Ideally, you should try to accomplish this in an environment that has few distractions, such as a quiet room in your home or perhaps a library. In reality, reading isn’t the best or quickest way to place information in your long-term memory, so extra concentration is required while reading. Try to read aloud i&#1
02; there is something that you really want to memorize. Something else you may want to try is slowing down your reading speed and work more on your comprehension. The speed is of less importance, and you can gradually increase it as your retention improves. Reading comprehension is something that takes time and practice, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t see great results right away. Just be patient and keep at it, and you will soon be retaining a lot more of what you are reading.

You can learn one of the many memorization techniques out there, but it doesn’t matter what you try, unless you are making a conscious effort to pay better attention and concentrate, most of your work will be for nothing. Better concentration is the number one tip to improve memory that I can recommend. The best part is, it’s not too hard to learn and you will undoubtedly find great reward in more facets of your life than just your memory ability.
