Do not cram for when studying. Give yourself plenty of breaks. It can be more difficult to remember things, if you are cramming information, since the brain needs adequate time to process it. Always remain careful. Breaks can help you when you’re struggling to learn something, but if the breaks you take are too long, you won’t have enough time to go over the information. Therefore, you want to study for extended periods of time, rather than the few hours prior to a test.

One way to more effectively retain information you need to remember is to consciously link the new information to something you know well already. For example, you can link information to a more familiar concept. Over time, this process will make it easier to store information in your long-term memory.

If you have a hard time remembering to do things, do not be ashamed to write sticky notes. Put them in places that you know you will frequently look at, such as next to your computer or cell phone. Think of these sticky notes as an aid to your memory.

If you want to have a good memory, remain active socially. Social interactions keep you alert and uplifted. Your brain cells will not get stimulated when you are feeling lonely or depressed. Exciting and interesting conversations with friends and family helps stimulate and exercise your brain, which then helps you improve your memory.

When trying to remember something, create a song or melody with music. Ask anyone who learned their alphabet as a child if it was learned through song, and you will see how effective it is. The repetition of something set to music helps your brain absorb the information. Put your next thought to a tune and see if it’s easier to recall.

There is nothing as frustrating as trying to remember something you cannot. One way to help in this scenario is to clear out and refocus your mind. Away from outside distraction, you should be able to recall the information you’re looking for if you’re able to focus in silence and serenity.

Say things out loud. When you learn the name of someone, or something, repeat it aloud to commit it to your memory. Repeating information out loud can be essential to retaining that memory for a later date. If you don’t mind being heard, do this several times for best results.

Make a memory tree. If you need to memorize a substantial amount of information, start by concentrating on the general idea, which will form the trunk of the tree. Make limbs, the crucial details, branch off the tree, the large subjects. Finally, assign leaves (little, less important details) to these branches. By visualizing information, you can improve your memory.

When you have to remember something, try coming up with a mnemonic device to help you to retain it. Mnemonics help you to remember information by using words as tools. It is especially helpful if you have trouble with remembering names. As an example, use M & M candy to associate with the names of the new
folks on the block, Michelle and Mike.

Your memory, and your brain, work best when you are receiving proper nutrition. Brain health needs healthy fats. Aim to have your focus on certain foods, such as fish, walnuts, and flax seeds that are high in healthy fats. Stay away from trans fats.
