Improving your memory and increasing your brain power is generally done 2 ways. 1. Proper Nutrition and healthy habits for the body. 2. Brain games/exercises. Below I have gathered some tips to help you improve your memory quick and also increase brain power.

Grow New Brain Cells. According to research, intense aerobic exercise (such as running, biking, etc.) stimulates the growth of cells in the brain’s hippocampus therefore making it possible to grow new brain cells (neurons) in the memory center of your brain.

Stay Sharp with Brain Games. Challenge your brain to remember things. When your brain needs to remember things, it will work harder and develop faster and more fully in order to accomplish this. All the memory aids we use may affect how well our memory works without these tools. If you use planners or agenda books for school or work, make an effort to remember things instead of writing them down. At home, go through each subject and try to remember the assignments. If you can’t remember, call a friend. After a while, you will notice an increased ability to mentally note any homework easily. You can then go back to using your planner only for when there are more than say, 10 things to do in a day. Or use it just to remember your tests dates or your appointments etc. Just use it to remember one type of thing.

Read – Reading works both your short-term and long-term memory (you have to remember what happened on the last page as well as what happened in the last chapter). Not only is reading good for your memory, it has been proven to overall boost your intelligence therefore increasing your brain power.

Sing a Song – Mnemonics (Memory Tools) such as singing make remembering anything a lot easier. The sillier the song is, the better. To remember numbers (such as a locker code), make a mathematical equation out of the three numbers, or remember what they add up to, for example, 3, 19 and 21 = 43.

Don’t skimp on exercise or sleep. Just as athletes rely on sleep and a nutrition-packed diet to perform their best, your ability to remember increases when you nurture your brain with a good healthy diet and other healthy habits. When you exercise the body, you exercise the brain. Treating your body well can enhance your ability to process and recall information. Physical exercise increases oxygen to your brain and reduces the risk for disorders that lead to memory loss, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Exercise may also enhance the effects of helpful brain chemicals and protect brain cells. Improve your memory by sleeping on it. When you’re sleep deprived, your brain can’t operate at full capacity. Problem-solving abilities, Creativity, and critical thinking skills are compromised. Whether you’re working, studying, or just trying to juggle life’s many demands, sleep deprivation is a recipe for disaster. But sleep is crucial to learning and improving memory in an even more fundamental way. Research shows that sleep is necessary for memory consolidation, with the key memory-enhancing activity occurring during the deepest stages of sleep.

Make time for friends and fun. Most of us think that wrestling with the New York Times crossword puzzle or mastering chess strategy is the only way to improve memory quick but countless studies show that lighthearted pastimes-hanging out with friends or enjoying a funny movie-can have many cognitive benefits. Healthy relationships: the ultimate memory booster? Humans are highly social animals. We’re not meant to survive, let alone thrive, in isolation. People need interaction. Relationships stimulate our brains-in fact, interacting with others may very well be the best kind of brain exercise. Research shows that having meaningful relationships and a strong support system are vital not only to emotional health, but also to brain health. In one recent study from the Harvard School of Public Health, for example, researchers found that people with the most active social lives had the slowest
rate of memory decline.
